    Electric-field control of a hydrogenic donor's spin in a semiconductor

    An AC electric field applied to a donor-bound electron in a semiconductor modulates the orbital character of its wave function, which affects the electron's spin dynamics via the spin-orbit interaction. Numerical calculations of the spin dynamics of a hydrogenic donor (Si) embedded in GaAs, using a real-space multi-band k.p formalism, show the high symmetry of the hydrogenic donor state results in strongly nonlinear dependences of the electronic g tensor on applied fields. A nontrivial consequence is that the most rapid Rabi oscillations occur for electric fields modulated at a subharmonic of the Larmor frequency

    The role of the Epstein-Barr virus in the development of post-transplant lymphomas is well established. However, not all lymphomas that arise in these patients contain Epstein-Barr virus, suggesting that other cofactors are involved in tumor pathogenesis. We propose that immunologic interactions that result from the introduction of immunocompetent donor cells during transplantation contribute to a lymphomagenic environment in the host. Murine models of lymphoma that arises following transfer of allogeneic hematopoietic cells are discussed and are related to the transplant setting. One contemporary viewpoint of transplantation immunology holds that interactions between the host and donor components of the immune system determine the ultimate degree of tolerance or reciprocal immunoreactivity (eg, rejection, graft-versus-host disease) within the transplant patient. We conclude that host-donor immunologic microchimerism may also be an over-looked factor in the development of posttransplant lymphomas

    A new tunneling path for reactions such as H+H_2→H_2+H

    The standard tunneling path in transition state theory for reactions such as H+H_2→H_2+H has been the so‐called reaction path, namely the path of steepest ascent to the saddle point. This path is now known to give numerical results for the reaction probability which are in disagreement with the exact quantum mechanical ones by an order of magnitude at low tunneling energies. A new tunneling path corresponding to a line of vibrational endpoints is proposed. It is much shorter and is shown to give results in agreement with the quantum ones to within about a factor of two. A semiclassical basis for choosing this new path is given

    The Radial Distribution of the Kuiper Belt

    We examine the radial distribution of the Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) using a method that is insensitive to observational bias effects. This technique allows the use of the discovery distances of all KBOs, independent of orbital classification or discovery circumstance. We verify the presence of an outer edge to the Kuiper Belt, as reported in other works, and we measure this edge to be at R = 47 ± 1 AU given any physically plausible model of the size distribution. We confirm that this outer edge is due to the classical KBOs, the most numerically dominant observationally. In addition, we find that current surveys do not preclude the presence of a second, unobserved Kuiper Belt beyond R = 76 AU

    Insects Associated With Butternut and Butternut Canker in Minnesota and Wisconsin

    Butternut, Juglans cinerea, is being killed throughout its native range in North America by the fungus Sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum. In addition to rain splashed spores, it is thought that the fungus may have spread over long distances to infect widely scattered butternut by insect vectors During surveys in 1995 and 1996 we found several insect species in close association with diseased butternut trees, and spores of S. clavigignenti-juglandacearum were isolated in pure culture from the bodies of some of these insects. Potential insect vectors were species in the coleopteran genera Eubulus (Curculionidae), Laemophlaeus (Laemophloeidae), and Glischrochilus (Nitidulidae). Because several insect species become contaminated with fungal spores, further study is needed to determine if any of these insects might transmit the fungus to healthy trees and thereby infect them

    We have obtained a near-infrared spectrum of the bright Kuiper Belt object 2000 EB173; the spectrum appears featureless. The spectrum has a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio to rule out the 1.5 and 2.0 μm absorption from water ice even at the low level seen in the Centaur Chariklo. In addition, we can rule out a 2.3 μm absorption at the level seen in the Centaur Pholus
